Most people rinse the filter and hope. The filter is the easy part and it is not where the problem is. Past it are the coils and the drain tray, dark and damp for hours after the unit shuts off, and that is where the grime and mould actually sit. Reaching them is not difficult, but it needs a way to get the chemical on and a way to catch what comes off before it runs down your wall.

How it goes

1. Turn the unit off at the wall
2. Hang the catchment bag under the unit
3. Take the filter out and rinse it
4. Spray the coils and give the solution time to lift the build-up
5. Flush it through with the pump bottle. What comes out is the part people photograph
6. Wipe down, refit the filter, close it up and let it dry

Do I need to be handy?

What this does not fix

Cleaning will not repair an electrical fault, a refrigerant leak, or a unit that is not cooling for mechanical reasons. If that is your problem, this kit will not solve it and we would rather say so now.
